What’s Up With All The GIANT Android Phones? (GOOG, AAPL, MOT)

There’s an interesting trend going on in smartphones right now: While Apple’s iPhone — the best designed phone in the world — continues to get slimmer and narrower , some of its rivals in the Google Android camp are getting larger and bulkier. Daring Fireball’s John Gruber pointed this out the other day , and it’s worth asking a few questions: Do people really want a giant, hulking phone in their pocket all day? If so, who? Is the extra screen size worth the size and heft? Didn’t the Hummer go out of style last decade? The new Motorola Droid X is the latest example, with a 4.3-inch screen and a case that makes the phone look GIANT in the Engadget reviewer’s hand . The site’s impression: “We were surprised at how light it felt, though we could really do without the hump on the back. And yes, the large thing fits in a jean pocket, but not without …

New Droid to Debut the Day Before iPhone 4 Hits Stores

Verizon and Motorola have announced they’ll be officially unveiling the latest, greatest version of the Droid on June 23, one day before the iPhone 4 is slated to appear in Apple stores around the U.S. We’re not entirely certain whether Verizon, Google, Motorola and Adobe execs at the June 23 press event will be showing off the Droid 2 , a physical keyboard beauty with all the trimmings, or the Droid X , a big and bold iPhone killer if there ever was one. Who knows, we could be seeing both devices on the 23rd. The original Droid went gangbusters in terms of sales from in its first week onward, and Android devices in general are performing strongly . In fact, several handsets are becoming so popular that manufacturers can’t keep up with consumer demand . It’s a good problem to have. Still, attempting to steal Apple’s thunder is a gutsy move. The iPhone 4 already has …

Motorola Droid 2 Pics and Video Leak Online

The hotter-than-Hades-in-July Motorola Droid — which we just reported is selling so fast that manufacturers can’t keep up with the demand — is getting some sweet upgrades with its newest iteration, the Droid 2. Photos of the new handset were leaked today by Droid Life , and they’ve got us positively twitching for a release date. Most significantly, the phone will retain the physical keyboard to which Droid lovers are so addicted. The keyboard has been overhauled, too, and now features keys that are slightly more raised and no gold D-pad, which was a barely useful mystery, at best. The lower edge of the phone’s keyboard layer is now completely covered by the screen, so you’ll have a smooth-surfaced device without the awkward “lip” seen on the first Droid. The rest of the hardware is pretty much identical to the original Droid. The device will allow for WiFi tethering, and it features a 750MHz OMAP processor and an updated version of Motoblur , Motorola’s push-based social networking service. Now for the bad news: It looks like the device won’t be getting a front-facing camera, so no video conferencing just yet for Droid owners. And the phone won’t come with Froyo (Android OS 2.2) installed, in all likelihood. You won’t get an EVO -class 8MP camera; 5MP will have to do. Still, do you think the Droid 2’s other features will make it worth buying? Do you think this new iteration will be as popular as the original? Check out this video of the phone’s boot sequence while you ponder those questions, then let us know your opinion in the comments. First Sprint EVO Commercial Hits YouTube [VIDEO]

This interesting Sprint EVO commercial has just hit the tubes — and the TVs, as well. For the network’s red-hot-though-as-yet-unlaunched device, the marketing folks have decided to make some pretty grandiose comparisons. Let’s gloss over whatever the narrator is saying, which is something along the lines of, “First isn’t later; it’s now.” If you have any idea what that means, you get a prize.* *Not really. Moving on to the imagery, we first see a prehistoric-looking wheel rolling into a velocipede, which tumbles into a locomotive standing on end. This turns into a domino chain of famously game-changing, ground-breaking inventions knocking into one another. A phonograph knocks over a microscope (we’re hoping this isn’t intended to be chronolgical), which bashes into a typewriter and a dangling cluster of lightbulbs. A telephone, a camera, an automobile and a wall of televisions also line up for our consideration.

New Droid Commercials Showcase Two Awesome Apps [VIDEO]

Two new Droid commercials just uploaded to YouTube show off the futuristic capabilities of a couple brilliant applications. Runstar is the star of “Dust,” a spot that shows how Droid owners can track their fitness routines and share their stats over social networks. And the stunning augmented reality application Layar is highlighted in “No View,” which details how AR can be used as a kind of enhanced window into the world around you. Runstar isn’t available in Apple’s App Store, but similar iPhone-friendly applications do exist. And of course, Layar is in the iPhone’s app store, as well, making this commercial more of a “me, too” spot than touting Droid’s advantages over it’s Apple counterpart

New Droid Incredible Commercial Is Incredible But Vague [VIDEO]

With an industrial-age-meets-space-age soundtrack and imagery that falls somewhere between robotics and The Matrix , the new commercial for the Droid Incredible leaves a lot to the imagination — perhaps a little too much. Without showing the device itself, the spot’s blur of pseudo-Asian and English typo-graphics tell us that the Incredible features a 1 Ghz Snapdragon processor, an 8-megapixel camera (a serious upgrade to the original Droid’s 5-megapixel camera), new and improved calendar views, backup assistant capability, 8 GB onboard memory, 512MB RAM, multi-touch pinch-to-zoom, FM radio and a 3.7-inch, high-res display
