How Non-Profits Should Approach Making iPhone Apps

Geoff Livingston co-founded Zoetica to focus on cause-related work, and released an award-winning book on new media Now is Gone in 2007. Much has been said about Apple’s policy barring iPhone and iPad application donations. The company cannot guarantee donations will be received by said non-profit, and as a result, donations to charities cannot be mentioned in any Apple application description, support materials, or the application itself. Certainly, this impacts the ability of non-profits and cause applications to collect donations. But how much? Before considering that, it’s important to note that the use of mobile applications for social good has increased dramatically. Two good examples are CauseWorld and The Extraordinaries . According to CauseWorld, in the past five months their location-based iPhone and Android apps have been downloaded 550,000 times. Further, it has helped provide 272,000 meals to people in the U.S., plant 74,000 trees, and provide 27 million liters of clean water in developing countries via Children’s Safe Drinking Water . “The Extraordinaries are a …

First iPhone 4 Camper Shows Up One Week Before Launch

Crazy? Perhaps. But Justin, who is already camping in front of Dallas Apple store on Knox St., will definitely be the first in line to pick up an iPhone 4. He’ll also spend a week of his life camping in the Texas heat, but he doesn’t mind. “Some would say I am crazy, but I say I’m a very determined fan. In fact I just might be one the biggest Apple fans you will actually meet. I have been the first costumer for this store since 2008 when the iPhone 3G was released. Normally I only camp out over night, but since I do not work due to the fact I am disabled with a seizure disorder and I am not in school at the point, I figure I just make it a fun experience and do it for a week,” Justin wrote on the MacRumors forum . The iPhone 4 is landing in Apple stores on June 24. Check out a video interview with Justin below. What’s Up With All The GIANT Android Phones? (GOOG, AAPL, MOT)

There’s an interesting trend going on in smartphones right now: While Apple’s iPhone — the best designed phone in the world — continues to get slimmer and narrower , some of its rivals in the Google Android camp are getting larger and bulkier. Daring Fireball’s John Gruber pointed this out the other day , and it’s worth asking a few questions: Do people really want a giant, hulking phone in their pocket all day? If so, who? Is the extra screen size worth the size and heft? Didn’t the Hummer go out of style last decade? The new Motorola Droid X is the latest example, with a 4.3-inch screen and a case that makes the phone look GIANT in the Engadget reviewer’s hand . The site’s impression: “We were surprised at how light it felt, though we could really do without the hump on the back. And yes, the large thing fits in a jean pocket, but not without …

Verizon-Ready iPhone Said To Ship This Year (VZ, AAPL)

A Verizon compatible version of the iPhone is going to ship from factories in China to Apple in the fourth quarter of this year, according to a report by DigiTimes . DigiTimes says Pegatron manufacturing is making CDMA iPhones. (CDMA is the network Verizon and Sprint uses.) DigiTimes’ timeline sounds entirely plausible. Earlier this year, the Wall Street Journal reported Pegatron would be manufacturing a CDMA iPhone starting in September. We’re not sure if it means Verizon will sell the iPhone by the end of the year, but we’ve be stunned if there’s no iPhone on Verizon by end of the first quarter in 2011. So, if you’re sick of AT&T botching all things Apple , there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. See Also: The iPhone 4 Buyers Guide Join the conversation about this story

With Crap Phones Like This, It’s No Wonder Nokia Is In Trouble (NOK, AAPL)

Nokia slashed its guidance today because it’s having trouble competing in the smartphone industry. Shares are down 10% on the news. Gee, wonder why? Via Daring Fireball , here’s a look at Nokia’s “new” X5 device , which looks like it was created in 2000. Hey, Nokia: HTC and even Motorola have figured out that since the iPhone came out in 2007 and embarrassed the rest of the mobile industry , there’s a new standard for smartphone hardware and software . You’re still nowhere close in terms of hardware or software quality. Your phones still look way too much like they did a decade ago. This is extremely important to you because smartphones represent the most lucrative chunk of the mobile industry, and a large percentage of your revenue and profit. Get a clue, or it’s downhill fast. New Droid to Debut the Day Before iPhone 4 Hits Stores

Verizon and Motorola have announced they’ll be officially unveiling the latest, greatest version of the Droid on June 23, one day before the iPhone 4 is slated to appear in Apple stores around the U.S. We’re not entirely certain whether Verizon, Google, Motorola and Adobe execs at the June 23 press event will be showing off the Droid 2 , a physical keyboard beauty with all the trimmings, or the Droid X , a big and bold iPhone killer if there ever was one. Who knows, we could be seeing both devices on the 23rd. The original Droid went gangbusters in terms of sales from in its first week onward, and Android devices in general are performing strongly . In fact, several handsets are becoming so popular that manufacturers can’t keep up with consumer demand . It’s a good problem to have. Still, attempting to steal Apple’s thunder is a gutsy move. The iPhone 4 already has …
